Tips For Reading Your Electricity Meter
There are a wide variety of electricity meters and knowing which type you have makes reading it a lot easier.
Electricity Digital Meter
This will have a digital display, showing five number in black or white with one or more numbers highlighted in red. The get a reading from this meter, write the fiver numbers, ignoring any of the red ones.
This reading is 93267
If you have a two-rate digital meter, you might get a lower price and off-peak electricity. For this reason your meter will display two rows – the top row is night, showing how many off-peak units you’ve used, whereas the bottom row is day and shows the amount of peak electricity you’ve used. To read the meter you must make a note of both sets.
Electricity Electronic Meter
Often, some two-rate meters only have one digital display and if you have this type of meter your readings will either flash the different rate readings or have a button to go through the readings for the different rates. This will display whether the reading is Rate 1 or Rate 2 and it is important to make a note of this along with the reading.
Electricity Dial Meter
A dial meter will have five or more dials that calculate your electricity reading. When getting your reading, you only need the first five numbers from the left and it is important that when writing these down you mark down the number that the counter has just passed. If the pointer is exactly on a number, write it down and underline it
Reading Your Gas Meter
There are two types of gas meters and before you take a reading you will need to be sure which kind you have.
Analogue Gas Meter
To read the gas correctly:
- Note the lower number if the pointer is between two numbers
- Ignore any red dials, ones marked ‘100 per rev’ and the large dial
With all this in mind, the dial meter reading will be 6653.
Each dial on this gas meter turns in the opposite direction to the one before it, so before you read your dial check the direction which they fall. All dials revolve from 0 to 9 before ticking over to 0 again.
Digital Gas Meter
To read correctly:
Ignore the numbers shown in red
- Ignore any printed zeros
- Ignore any digits after the decimal point
So in this example, the digital meter reading will be 75193
