Should I fix my business energy prices?
A: Fixing your energy prices can be a strategic move to safeguard your business against market fluctuations. By locking in a fixed rate, you’ll maintain the same cost per unit of energy, even if market prices rise. However, if prices decrease, you’ll still be tied to the fixed rate.
Before committing to a fixed price, it’s essential to compare various fixed-rate deals from different energy suppliers. This will help you find the most competitive rates tailored to your business’s energy needs, ensuring you make a well-informed decision.
Is there a business energy price cap?
A: Unlike domestic energy prices, business energy prices are not capped.
The energy price cap is the maximum amount energy suppliers can charge domestic customers for each unit of energy and standing charge if they’re on a standard variable tariff.
How do I get a smart meter?
A: For information on smart meters, including the different types of smart meters available, their numerous benefits and how to register your installation online, please visit our dedicated Smart Meter page.

Energy Tariffs and Energy Contracts

What is a unit rate?
A: The unit price is the rate charged per unit or kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity or gas you use. This rate can vary based on factors like meter type, location, energy consumption levels, contract length, and global commodity costs.
What are standing charges?
A: Standing charges are a fixed cost included in each electricity and gas invoice, regardless of whether energy is used on that day. The standing charge covers the cost to maintain the energy supply network, take meter readings, and support some government social and environmental schemes.
How can I find out my business energy contracts end date?
A: The business energy contract end date will be on your energy bill. If there is no “plan end date” specified you may not be in a contract, in which case your bill will state this and explain you are on a standard variable tariff (out of contract rates).
Can I cancel my business energy contract?
A:
• Early termination fees may apply if you wish to end your contract before your fixed price tariff end date.
• If your energy contract ends within the next 6 months, you can opt to leave it.
• If you want to switch before your contract end date, it could incur exit fees.
