There are some very good reasons why you should read your business electricity meter and the main one is to ensure that your bill is as accurate as possible.

Your energy provider will usually appoint a meter reader or data collector for collecting these meter readings.

There will be, however, times when they are unable to access your premises, or they may not take a reading during one quarter.

This could be because your premises are hard to reach and you will need to submit meter readings of your own.

Correct business electricity rates

It’s also a good idea to keep meter readings anyway, even if the provider sends someone to read it, to ensure that you are on the correct business electricity rates from your supplier and to check they are not making any mistakes with their billing.

For those with a digital business electricity meter then you need to read the numbers from left to right but ignore the final red number.

For those firms who may have more than one electricity contract, for example, they may have separate day and night rate tariffs then these numbers will need to be recorded separately.

The meters will probably be clearly marked for which reading is relevant, whether it’s a day or night tariff.

If your meter has dials then you will read the numbers from left to right and also ignore the final last red number.

Most of these meters will have six dials but it’s only the first five dials that will make up the meter reading and should a needle be placed between two numbers, then it’s the lower number you need to record.

Business electricity supplier

Your business electricity supplier may have installed an electronic meter and these modern versions will display the reading and again you only need the first five numbers on the left and the display will also show the rate that you are on.

It’s a good idea to get into the habit of recording your business electricity meter readings every month so you can keep track of how much energy you are using and help ensure your provider is billing you correctly.

Mistakes can happen with billing unless you are on a half hourly meter with the data being sent every 30 minutes to the provider, so having the information to hand may prove useful.

If you would like to know more about reading your business electricity meter on a regular basis and to use the information to access cheaper electricity deals, then it’s time to speak with the experts at D-Energi.
