What P272 Means To Businesses

With more than 100,000 firms affected by a change in business energy regulations, a fair number of them may be wondering what P272 means for them.

Their business energy supplier should have taken steps already to explain what the changes have meant – if they are affected.

Essentially, P272 means that the firm’s energy bill will now be calculated in a different way – but it will mean they receive more accurate bills as a result.

This is done because a reading from their meter will be sent to their energy supplier every half-hour for the bill to be accurate.

This means there’s no more estimating of energy bills and the firm will see how much energy they are using and when; this is information they can use to negotiate a better deal.

When P272 was introduced

When P272 was introduced, it was mainly for larger users of electricity with electricity meters with the numbers 05 – 08 on them.

These new meters are effectively smart meters but they will be able to help firms move their business processes to off-peak times to enjoy lower bills, should they want to.

And, as mentioned previously, firms can also use the data as there is a growing number of software packages available to do this, to see where and how their firm is using energy.

This means they may able to introduce energy efficiencies to help reduce their bills even further.

P272 legislation

However, the P272 legislation means firms will have enough information to hand so they can use this when negotiating with their current energy supplier or for switching suppliers.

That’s because energy suppliers need to offer a bespoke deal for a potential client and the data will be crucial for this process.

This also means that the firm can more easily access cheaper energy deals from a new supplier and the team at D-Energi can explain more about why and how this will work.

For those firms who think they may be affected by P272 but haven’t been contacted by their current supplier about switching meters, then it’s time to find out more.

Firms in the UK need to be P272 compliant

Also, all firms in the UK need to be P272 compliant by April 1, 2016, and it’s also at this point that their business electricity tariff may have changed.
