The Role Businesses Play In Leading The Way To A Greener Future

by D-ENERGi

As recently as COP28, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, which took place in Dubai, stressed the importance of a greener future. World leaders have been in agreement that there is no time to lose, and everyone must play their part in leading the way to a less damaging way of life. Now is almost certainly the time to act if we are to ensure that the worst impacts of climate breakdown can be avoided.

The question is just what role should businesses be playing when it comes to leading the way to a future that is greener?

Be ambitious

Over the last couple of years the term “net zero” has become more prevalent, and this is the term that many businesses are making plans to work towards rather than the previous “science-based targets”. The term net zero focuses more on the idea of getting to zero emissions, or as close as possible and as quickly as possible. Having done some research, more businesses are committing themselves to a target and offering a deadline by which they hope they will achieve this. Big businesses like Tesco and the John Lewis Partnership for example have committed to 2050 as the date by which they will achieve net zero. Their public commitment and news of how they hope to achieve this sets a great precedent for other smaller businesses.

Small actions soon add up

The simple basics such as changing your lighting, turning the heating down just a small amount and reminding staff to turn off equipment and lights when not in use can really start to add up to a significant change. If everyone in your business is committed to making the changes, then this really will start to make a difference. You may even find that employees will be able to suggest other small ways in which improvements can be made that will help towards a greener future.

Swap to renewable

Switching to a renewable source of renewable energy is a good way to play your part. Some of the big companies. Like Nestle, have entered into Power Purchase Agreements, which has allowed for the creation of a new Scottish windfarm whilst Bentley added 21,000 solar panels to their roof and a further 10,000 to their new solar carport to produce all of their energy onsite. Whilst this isn’t an option for every company, it is possible to swap to a more renewable energy source.

Collaborate

If businesses work together to solve shared challenges like climate breakdowns, then this collaboration can lead to a greater degree of innovation. The creation of net zero carbon clusters can help when it comes to finding ways to deliver net zero carbon whilst also developing hydrogen as a fuel source, for example.

Start now

One thing is very clear when it comes to leading the way for a greener future. It is important to start as soon as possible. It is never too early for any business to get involved and play their part, whether that is developing new products or creating a new business model. There are plenty of ways in which they can start to lead the way towards the greener future we need to protect our planet, and future generations.
